Weekend

We watched "Into the Wild"  this weekend.  Good movie.  Great soundtrack-at least if your like me and like Eddie Vedder.  Made these awesome steak sandwhices.  Essentially rib eye with a rub of bay leaves, cumin, paprika and chipolte powder then some melted gorgonzola cheese onto ciabatta.  These are amazing.  Tried them with a couple of mojitos.  Similar to the drink from last weekend but better.  This is mint, sugar, lime juice, rum and club soda and ice.  Nice summer drink.

First CD I bought.  Seems strange given my taste is for more alternative music, but she can sing.  She is kind of a freak.   Did not see the Cure-probably Foo Fighters in July.  But here is my favorite Cure song.  I guess if Tori and I have a "song" this is it.

Smoothie Recipe

This is how I start out my day--see if you like it.

ice, skim milk, banana, frozen strawberries, oatmeal (not cooked),  1 scoop of vanilla whey protein powder, 1 tbsp of peanut butter, few chocolate chips, a little nestles strawberry quick.  Blend up and drink down.

Also usually have a couple of egg whites on toast with honey.

Not sure the number of calories, at least have not calculated, but this bfast is a great source of protein, fruit and fiber.  You could cut out the choc chips and strawberry quick and replace the   vanilla whey with chocolate whey protein powder.

I think your kids may also like the drink.

Tonight my smoothie may consist of grapefruit juice, (1/4 ounce),  lime juice ( 1 ounce), crushed ice ( 2 cups), white rum (2 ounces) and  maraschino liqueur (1/4 ounce).  Kidding.  Most likely just a beer, however thought that the "Hemingway Daiquiri" sounded good.  I will let you know by Monday.

Tikka Masala

Had the Chicken Tikka Misala from India Palace on Sunday.  It was really great.  Highly recommended.  We carried it out and it was still great!!

Blog vacation

This will be my last post for a while-  need a break from the blog.  I will work on a couple more video blogs over the next few weeks and will post an entry about Saturday Clinic availability.

Taking my place, will be Tori-my wife.  You should notice a different "feel" with each entry.  Will probably be more traditional blogging-essentially what is going on in her life and more about our kids.

Having take out tonight from India Palace-great place.  Like their lunch buffet the best, but if having a craving for curry, this, along with Lanna Thai or Pei Wei-is the place.

ITR

In the Raw (or ITR as it is known by sushi aficionados-not me) was where I had dinner last night.  I eat sushi about once every 5years.  Kicking and screaming I reluctantly went last night to ITR at 61st Sheridan.  The verdict-one of the best eating out experiences I have had in a long time.

The place was packed, the music was loud and the food was very, very good.  I had the Volcano and Nirvana Rolls along with a taste of the Id Roll.  Certainly not cheap-couple of beers each , sushi, dessert, and tip and you could be close to $100.

Great atmosphere-we will go back.  Sushi

Holiday traditions

In response to the comment about holiday traditions-one of  our favorites is  on Christmas Eve is to drink a kamakazie shot for each of the 12 days of Christmas-pass out in front of the tree and hope that we do not disturb Santa Claus.

Seriously-I was kidding about the shots-we go to my in laws on Christmas Eve and have Lefse (potato pancake) and meatballs.  This is a Norweign tradition, I think, with the meatballs replacing some sort of fish.  We also eat what was initially oyster stew that has now been replaced by the lobster bisque from Flavors.  We may have a beer but no kamakazies-few times in college will last you for the rest of your life.

Thanksgiving Breakfast

If you are already bored with your family and you are reading this on Thanksgiving (shame on you).
Anyway check out the waffle recipe that we made this morning:

Crispy Cornmeal Bacon Waffles

8 bacon slices

1 1/4 flour
3/4 cup yellow corn meal
2 1/4 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
2 cups buttermilk
2 eggs
3 tbsp pure maple syrup
1/2 stick unsalted melted butter, cooled

Cook then crumble bacon.  Whisk flour, cornmeal, powder, soda in bowl.  Separate bowl whisk milk, egss, and syrup to blend.  Add wet to dry stir until just blended.  Fold in butter and crumbled bacon.
Cook in waffle iron.  6 servings.  enjoy.

No turkey for me-a little too boring.  Yes, even the deep fried variety.  Tonight is beef tenderloin.  I will post the recipe later.  Well, maybe a little turkey (very little) for lunch.

Other recipes you all like-send them this way.

Starbucks Lingo

Rarely do I ever quote what little kids say ie:  "they say the darndest things", you know America's Funniest Home Videos was funny that first episode now everything is staged, -but if you did see Bob Saget on Entourage-now that was funny- however my daughter said something today that made me laugh but also sit back and think a little.

This morning we were at the Starbucks Drive Thru at 91st Yale-great location for me-I ordered like this-"I would like a grande' drip and a tall non-fat caramel macchiato." My daughter immediately said-"what language are you speaking?  Sometimes I wonder.

Smoothies

If Seinfelds wife can do it-why not me?  No, I am not giving out any recipes for veges in brownies-however I have had a few friends in college that mixed a plant with brownies (sorry for the regression).

I truly believe that you can offer your kids healthy foods-but they usually  eat what they   want to eat.  Now I know not all of you agree with me-but hey this is my blog-I get to write what I want, right?

It seems that most of us eat a bunch of junk until we are around 25-30, then we go-I better eat a little better and exercise some more.  So here are a few of my smoothie recipes that I eat about twice a day:

ice, skim milk/1% milk, banana, blueberries, pineapple, oatmeal, scoop of protein

ice, milk, strawberries, banana, peanut butter, oatmeal and protein

other fruits that I use are mango, apples, cherries, raspberries, papaya-the oatmeal is a good fiber supplement and if you find a good tasting protein (vanilla), makes the smoothie really good.

You will just need to experiment with the amounts of each item.

A snack bar that I have found that is good especially if your older kids like carbs and have a hard time eating protein is the Cliff Builder's Bar.

Enjoy-now if I could just get on Oprah-I could discuss both my smoothie recipes and this silly autism/vaccine debate.

Caz's Chowhouse

Not much to currently write about except that we went to Caz's tonight-food was good and kids eat for free on Wed. night.  Have started trying to catch up with Weeds on Showtime.  Very funny show.

Alot of allergy and asthma issue currently in the office.  The weather change has also brought that on.  Few cases of viral pneumonia-almost RSV like.  Fever, alot of cough and crackly lungs.  This is sure the time of the year if you have a newborn to try and limit as much exposure as you can.

looks like the FDA has really cracked down on OTC meds for kids under 2-however above two is still up to the discretion of the physician.  Use only as needed and call or email if you have any dosage questions.

Yesterday was Kacie's last day.  She had her baby today.   She was a great worker.  Very smart girl.  I have been trying to convince her to go to medical school-we will see.

There will be some changes to our website over the next month.  We will actually be hosting the site in the office-allowing me to make changes not only on the blog but also real time on the website.  The style and format will change slightly, but the content and applications will stay the same.

Enjoy the Fall Break.
